One of my favourite authors Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote:
“Though we travel the world to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.”
From the very first moment I read these words, their impact took root in my heart.
Since then I have done my best to try and carry the beautiful within me, wherever I may be led to travel.
I have strived to pack and fill the suitcase of my soul with beautiful memories and imagery…
Here are just a few of the things that I have packed into my own suitcase over the years..
The sight of the heavens changing incredible hues of pinks, purples, oranges, blues and gold’s during a sunrise or sunset…
The cry of a new-born infant I’ve been blessed to help into this world in the delivery room, as well as the facial expression of the parents.
The sound of children’s laughter.
The sigh of relief when somebody breathes well on their own when we have removed their ventilator in intensive care.
Reading special handwritten cards or letters from patients, family and friends that have tugged at my heartstrings.
The smell and taste of my grandma and moms decadent homemade Greek meals and desserts..
The taste of pure cold water from a mountain stream.
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee in a cosy coffee shop.
The feeling of a hug given in love.
The sight of my daughter’s smile.
The joy of singing along with an uplifting song or humming to a catchy tune.
The pleasure of watching butterflies feed on the flowers and flutter between blooms.
The droning of dragonflies hovering overhead when I swim in a natural pool.
The sighting of dolphins prancing joyfully in the ocean right next to a boat I was travelling on in the Mediterranean and the incredible sight of whales breaching close to shore in our seaside village of Gonubie
That special feeling that accompanies breathing fresh air in deeply just after a downpour of rain.
Glistening fireflies alighting the garden as I sit around a campfire.
Admiring rainbows that appear to brighten my day and world and with them the reminder that God’s promises are steadfast and true.
Standing under a gently cascading waterfall with birdsong providing the music
The bliss of
“I am so grateful for Your love and Grace Lord” and then hearing God’s gentle whisper into my heart through all these beautiful things He created for me to enjoy
“I love you my child”
The glorious knowledge that love, laughter and living with a grateful heart are choices that we can make every single day of our lives.
We don’t have to travel the world to find the beautiful.
As Emerson said, it is right there inside of us.
the suitcases within our souls well.
Let’s fill them with all the beauty and cherished moments we have been blessed to experience in this world.
With Jesus as our Saviour we carry the beautiful forever with us, and we will feel prompted to freely share it with all our fellow travellers…
God Bless everybody
