Dreams do come true: Nono Zwane chosen to join the Mrs SA 2024 semi-finalist ranks

On the 5th of February, The Dallmayr Mrs South Africa’s class of 2024 is finally here. Among its 2024 semi-finalists is Centurion’s very own Nono Zwane, a Specialist Area Manager at a Telecommunication company, who just recently relocated from the Vaal after staying there for 23 years.  With a passion for Breast Cancer Awareness, assisting at children’s homes, and running, Nono Zwane officially set off on her Mrs South Africa journey on Friday, 2 February 2024, during the pageant’s National Public Casting, held at the Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, Gauteng.

“I was so excited when my name was called. My name was called last! This announcement is important to me because I want to encourage the Cancer warriors to not despair as there is life after Cancer. You can do anything you put your mind to.  I am representing the village girls and want to show them that they can dream big and live their dreams ,” says Zwane.

Dallmayr Mrs South Africa is a pageant and female empowerment program designed to unleash participants’ hidden potential by teaching them valuable skills, such as leadership, financial competence, sponsorship management, communication, personal branding, and media management.

“The goal is to take women out of their comfort zones and have them rethink who they are and what they want out of life. We help them face their fears, find their purpose, and discover the strength and abilities they held inside all along,” explains Joani Johnson, CEO of Mrs South Africa.

Driven by purpose

Nono Zwane says that she first heard of Dallmayr Mrs South Africa when she saw it broadcast on TV last year.  She was motivated to apply when her photographer encouraged her to enter after hearing her life story, at her 40th birthday party. Like those who came before, she believes she can make a substantial impact on people’s lives.

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” says Zwane quoting Maya Angelou. Coming from a humble background in the village of Madikwe, Northwest Province, she looked up to successful people. This gave her hope that it is possible for her too and that she can also dream big and chase those dreams. “This journey will inspire both girls from the village and my fellow Cancer warriors, to show them that their situation is bad at the moment, but it will not be like that forever.” Says Zwane

“We need to get up and get our dreams. No one is going to bring our dreams to us. If I can do it, so can anyone!” she explains.

Johnson notes that the class of 2024 is shaping up to be a formidable, influential group of women. “We received the most ever entries this year, beginning in November 2023 and persisting into the week leading up to the National Public Casting, which speaks to the incredible reputation that Mrs South Africa has as a result of the value we offer to all of our participants. This is truly a life transformation journey that seeks to give our contestants the tools, knowledge, and support they need to pursue their dreams and guide them in realising their full potential as forces for good.

“We were very excited by the strength and diversity of this year’s applicants, and the judges certainly had their work cut out for them in selecting the 2024 semi-finalists from such a large and inspiring group.”

Nono Zwane has already joined in on a jam-packed weekend of empowerment workshops and development events held during the first Dallmayr Mrs South Africa Semi-Finalist Conference of the year on 3 and 4 February 2024, at Emperors Palace.

Nono Zwane will participate in many more workshops, photoshoots, media interviews, fitness challenges, sponsor events, and community projects in the days leading up to the Semi-Finals Judging Week and Showcase early in July, where the 2024 top 30 finalists will be announced.

Olka Bolka interviewed Zono to find out more about her.

Tell our readers where you were born and raised, where you currently live, and about your family.

I was born and raised, in a township called Madikwe, in the Northwest province and moved out of home at 18 to start my studies at Vaal University of Technology.  I stayed in the Vaal area for 23 years and now living in Centurion where I moved in November last year.

I have a husband of 11 years and two kids 9(girl) and 14(boy)

What did you do after Matric?

I studied Labour relations at the Vaal University of Technology and acquired a national diploma

Then later studied for a Bachelor of Business Administration and Honours.

What profession do you practice?

I am a specialist Area Manager at a Telecommunications company.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I met different people and went to different places to fulfill my duties all the time.

What advice would you give to someone starting in your line of work?

Be open-minded, be willing to learn every day, and ask when you don’t know the answer to what is required of you.

What is the most memorable / funniest incident you’ve ever experienced in your business?

Memorable is always being number one in my team on sales

Tell us about yourself in a nutshell.

I am a breast cancer survivor who is a go-getter.  I grab every opportunity presented to me.  I love everything I have.  I love running and Gym. My family is everything to me and I give everything I do my all.

Do you take part in any recreational activities, if yes tell us about them.


I used to do kickboxing as well at the Tri Dragon’s Club in Vanderbijlpark but now I moved to Centurion and still looking and deciding if I want to continue with it.

What made you decide to participate in Mrs. South Africa?

I turned 40 last year and threw a party. The photographer I hired actually asked me why don’t I enter after hearing my story.  I thought about it and said why not because I have a story to tell and it will inspire and give hope to many.  I also took this challenge to get out of my comfort zone, to get empowered as a woman, and to learn business traits.

What do you value?

My health, family, giving to others, life experiences.

What is your vision should you win?

To get more involved with Breast Cancer awareness charities.  I want to spread the word as far as possible and I believe that the title will enable me, will open doors that I currently am unable to open.  To be able to be that influence on girls especially from rural areas to show them that dreams do come true as I’m a village girl myself.

My mom, my sister, personal experiences.

To climb Kilimanjaro

What is your WHY in life?

To be an inspiration to others.  For people to draw courage from my experiences and be able to go on with their lives.  To help others in need in any way that I am capable of. Also to push myself to be the best version of myself.
